Teaching Methods of the Teachers Observed

Observation Day
Observation Day

During my teaching practicum, I was assigned to teach Science (Biology) to Grade 7 students in the Adventurers and Explorers classes. My cooperating teacher was Dr. Aileen G. De Guzman, and I had the opportunity to observe Ma’am Joyce Anne Lising Calusa.

In the observed class, Ma’am Joyce utilized engaging teaching methods to enhance student participation and understanding. She started with a True or False activity, presented in a fun and interactive way to assess prior knowledge. To maintain student engagement, she incorporated an ice-breaking activity before delivering the lesson explanation. A group-based Plants vs. Zombies game was then introduced, where students took turns throwing questions at each other based on different difficulty levels. The lesson concluded with a quiz to assess comprehension, followed by a brief closing session to summarize key points. These varied strategies created an interactive and dynamic learning environment for the students.

Their Learning Material and Innovation

The learning materials and teaching strategies observed in the class were designed to promote active engagement and deeper understanding. Ma’am Joyce Anne Lising Calusa used a variety of materials, including visual aids, interactive slides, and prepared question sets for the activities. She also incorporated games and group activities, such as the Plants vs. Zombies game, where students engaged in a dynamic question-and-answer exchange based on different levels of difficulty.

To make learning more interactive, she introduced a fun True or False activity at the beginning of the lesson to assess students’ prior knowledge. An ice-breaking session was also included to create a lively atmosphere and enhance student participation. Additionally, a quiz was given at the end of the lesson to reinforce key concepts and measure student understanding. These innovative approaches helped ensure an engaging and effective learning experience.

Sources of Learning and Technology Used by the Teachers

The teacher utilized various sources of learning, including textbooks, teacher-prepared worksheets, and multimedia presentations. The lesson was structured around a mix of traditional and modern resources to ensure comprehensive understanding. Interactive materials, such as pre-made question sets and instructional slides, were also used to facilitate discussions and activities.

In terms of technology, the classroom was equipped with a projector, which was frequently used to display lesson content, visual aids, and game instructions. PowerPoint presentations and digital quizzes were incorporated to enhance engagement and comprehension. Additionally, interactive learning methods, such as the Plants vs. Zombies game, leveraged both printed and digital resources to encourage student participation.

Authentic Assessment Used by the Teachers

The teacher employed various assessment methods to measure student understanding effectively. Formative assessments, such as quizzes and interactive Q&A sessions, were used to track progress. Group activities encouraged collaboration and critical thinking, while structured discussions helped reinforce key concepts. These approaches ensured that students actively engaged with the material beyond simple recall.
